WABN Application Instructions

Admissions Criteria

The WABN Mentoring Program seeks to select a diverse group of former and current elite female athletes who have retired from sport or are transitioning from sport to a professional career in business, government or other spheres of leadership. The program is designed to prepare and propel high-potential emerging women leaders to greater heights of responsibility and leadership. IWF members are not eligible to be candidates.

WABN defines an “elite female athlete” as a woman who is currently or has previously competed as a professional or semiprofessional player in an organized sport, or at a national or international level.

The Mentoring Program provides support for current and former elite female athletes from all continents and at different points in their careers. This may come in the early stages of a young woman’s career or at a key point in the development and growth of an experienced rising leader.

There are no tuition fees for program participation although mentees are responsible for any associated costs they may incur (phone, travel, etc.).

International Selection Committee Guidelines

The WABN International Selection Committee will select program participants based on the following guidelines:

  • Applicant will have demonstrated athletic performance and leadership within her sport.
  • Applicant will have displayed substantive academic or professional work experience and significant direct accomplishments.
  • Applicant will have displayed current and potential leadership, indicated by professional, volunteer and other activities, as well as through recommendations.
  • Applicant will have an expectation of a long professional leadership horizon following the mentorship.
  • Candidates are judged, in part, on their ability to leverage and maximize the opportunity over time.
  • Applicants must have English proficiency. Mentor/mentee matches will accommodate language preferences, when possible.

Mentee Expectations

Each mentee will be assigned a carefully selected mentor from the membership of the IWF, who is an accomplished and recognized leader in her field.

Mentees are expected to commit to the following responsibilities:

  • Once mentees are assigned a mentor, mentees will make the initial contact with their mentor and follow up within one week if a response is not received.
  • Connect with their mentor a minimum of eight times during the course of the 12-month program via phone, Skype, email, in-person, etc.
  • Draft an action plan outlining goals and commit to making progress against those goals throughout the course of the program.

  • Applicant will have an expectation of a long professional leadership horizon following the mentorship.
  • Communicate with IWF and EY if issues arise that diminish the mentee’s ability to fully participate in the program (workload drastically increases, major life change, etc).
