Anita Nowak, Ph.D., is the Academic Associate for the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. She is an empathy expert, award-winning educator and social impact coach. Anita believes in the power of “empathic action,” a term she coined in her 2011 doctoral dissertation that now animates all her teaching, writing, coaching, consulting and public speaking. Currently, she is responsible for designing and teaching a highly experiential course devoted to addressing the UN Global Sustainability Goals. She also teaches on leadership and social entrepreneurship and innovation. In 2014 and 2019, Anita was awarded Professor of the Year by the Desautels Management Undergraduate Society.
Prior to her current role, she co-designed McGill’s “Social Learning for Social Impact” Massive Open Online Course and was the Founding Director of the Social Economy Initiative, responsible for integrating social entrepreneurship and social innovation into the faculty’s teaching, research and outreach. Anita also served in the Jeanne Sauvé Foundation’s Public Leadership Program as Program and Instructional Design Advisor, and advised the McConnell Foundation on RECODE, an initiative to help scale social innovation at colleges and universities across Canada.
She is author of the forthcoming book, “The Empaths Strike Back: Stories of Everyday Heroes Using Empathy to Change the World.” As a three-time TEDx speaker, she also curates the Empathic Action Facebook community page and hosts a YouTube channel by the same name. She is a certified personal and professional coach, and helps high net and ultra-high net worth individuals and their families achieve their philanthropic and social impact goals.
